This time a Lange Messer. It's been a long time since I last tried my hand at any kind of smithing, but I've always wanted to have a go at making my own sword so I sourced some high tensile steel & got stuck in. There's still a way to go but here is a quick look at progress so far.
The hilt elements are all hand forged & the blade a mixture of forging & stock removal i.e grinding. There's still quite a bit of work to do & I'm not 100% happy with the proportions of the hilt but so far its been an interesting project. More on this soon.
I was going to attempt a snazzy camp pattern but the sources I've found indicate that the captured R35's were in plain dark green livery. I have Aussified it with the addition of 7th Division's Kookaburra & Boomerang device though. Although classified as light tanks these carried considerably thicker armour than the Vickers VIb's in use by the Commonwealth forces in Syria & were eagerly pressed into service.

Next up a 2 pounder AT gun:
As you can see still a work in progress, these are often seen portee'd on various trucks because the carriages had a habit of falling apart over too much rough terrain.Handgrenadealienhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16616013296799287812noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5626442190754966313.post-83391518458931304942016-12-26T12:03:00.000-08:002016-12-26T12:03:27.173-08:00Orcadians.The last of my Claymore Castings Men at Arms painted in the livery of the various Earls of Orkney:
I have no idea if the Mormaers of Mar ever allied themselves with the Lords of the Isles, but to be honest Scottish warfare & internal politics in the 14th/ 15th centuries is so incredibly byzantine anything is possible.
Really happy with how this project is shaping up. I wasn't too sure about painting heraldry by hand but for a small project like this it is manageable. Not sure I would want to tackle it on a grand scale though.Handgrenadealienhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16616013296799287812noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5626442190754966313.post-79079311020941716812016-11-06T04:20:00.001-08:002016-11-06T04:20:17.566-08:00Rumours Of My Demise Have Been Greatly Exaggerated. Its been a while now since my last post here & longer still since I actually laid brush to miniature. The reasons for this are long & somewhat tedious to relate but briefly come down to a lack of enthusiasm for wargaming in general & a renewal of interest in roleplaying; GMing is a very time consuming business.
Anyway with the lengthening evenings of Autumn upon us I laid out some hard earned cash to complete the Lion Rampant army I started back in 2014:
For those of you unfamiliar with it, painting Heraldry is a Royal pain in the arse; but not nearly so bad as applying transfers, a Dantesque torture in my book.
Almost as bad is researching West Highland heraldry, there are a few common elements scattered through it ( Ship, Eagle Rampant, Red Salmon, Red Hand) but these can be put together with a bewildering randomness, where they are recorded at all. Quartering arms! what a good idea, lets dispense with the expensive business of marrying then including the wife's heraldry on our kit, lets just bung a bunch of stuff on there in the first place.
You could look at this two ways I suppose, on one hand it gives you carte blanche as a painter to well, make it up; but that deprives one of the enjoyment of researching a subject & thus expanding your knowledge which is the approach I like to take. Could be why it takes me so long to finish projects, thank god for the internet, there's always some one out there who's beaten you to it; try typing in West Highland Heraldry, you'll be amazed.Handgrenadealienhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16616013296799287812noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5626442190754966313.post-36701678833468747222016-08-14T05:12:00.001-07:002016-08-14T05:12:53.473-07:00A Small Corner of Palestine.Have been suffering from burn-out in the miniature painting department since May, it will pass eventually, more than likely when I find something to inspire me sufficiently. In the meantime I have updated one of my old Panion boards for use in a planned game of Chain of Command, being as this is a skirmish game I have cluttered things up a bit to reduce sight lines.
I intend to add some scrub to the hillside prior to gaming & have some more wall sections ( in reality no more than stones cleared from fields & stacked round the margins) in production so nearly there, just need to set a date to game now.
These come courtesy of Perry Miniatures & they are very nice, particularly keen on the horses, the anatomy is spot on. Depending on work commitments the next post may actually feature a war-game!
Its been an interesting project not least because of trying out a few new weathering techniques. This explains in part the extended nature of the build, I'd forgotten how long you have to leave spirit based paints to dry between coats.
This will form the basic force for use with Too Fat Lardies Chain of Command rules which use the platoon as the basic unit with a number of additional supports depending on the type of scenario to be played.
I still have a few more add ons to complete including a portee'd 37mm Bofors anti tank gun & some Yeomanry:
I didn't want my carriers to look too uniform hence the decision to go with a simple desert yellow scheme, I did experiment with weathering powders though. Not sure if it comes out on the photos too well but in the flesh they do add a bit of depth.Handgrenadealienhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16616013296799287812noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5626442190754966313.post-72919212204617435292016-04-03T09:27:00.001-07:002016-04-03T09:27:26.591-07:00Bren Gun Carriers in Caunter. A short tutorial.I don't know where the time goes these days, it may be an age thing but more likely my customers start coming out of hibernation after the clocks go forward. This is one of the bonuses of working outdoors, you do get to appreciate the diversity of the British seasons.
Regardless, I have been busy progressing the WW2 Syria project in my rare moments of leisure& thought I might share my method of reproducing the sometimes controversial Caunter camouflage pattern. I don't pretend that this is by any means a definitive guide, but the colours do scale quite well to the 1/56th that Perry miniatures produce their vehicles in:
Work is also progressing on the infantry platoon featured previously, only a few figures to go now; next up will be a Bofors 37mm AT gun porteed on a Morris truck & some members of the Cheshire Yeomanry. Interestingly the Cheshire Yeomanry were the last unit of the British Army to mount a cavalry action, routing a Vichy French infantry unit out of a village in Syria; it isn't counted as a charge because apparently they didn't raise their swords!
Really enjoying this little side project; it turns out my Great Uncle served with 7th Armoured in the Desert which makes it a bit more personal. I hope to find out a little more about this in due course because as was typical of many of his generation he didn't disclose very much about it. Most of my conversations with him tended to revolve around agriculture & its associated woes which seemed to interest him far more than armoured engagements with the Afrika Korp. Credit to him for that.
I do like big spectacular games with plenty of figures on the table but pressures of work & other commitments have reduced the opportunities to perhaps one or two games per year. So to try & reverse this trend I am going to paint up a few figures for small unit actions set in the Desert War.
This is the first squad nearly complete in only three evenings of painting. Using vallejo panzer colours & some washes these Perry miniatures paint up really nicely & quickly which is great because my concentration span for painting has declined severely over the last few years.
The box set comes with enough figures to complete a full platoon of 37, but I'm going to assume a little bit of wastage so I can use the alternative heads included on the sprues to make up a small group of LRDG for a bit of variety. This will also give me a valid reason to paint up a couple of vehicles.
This might seem a bit of a departure from my usual wargaming interests but I was clearing out some boxes the other night & found a bag of Airfix 1/32nd scale 'Desert Rats' that I received for my 7th birthday, so its actually gone full circle.
This being a sparth axe/ bardiche from the very talented Josef Dawes at White Well Arms. There seems to be some debate over the origins of the berdiche, but the weight of opinion seems to suggest it evolved in Northern Europe from the earlier Danish Axe. I had a session yesterday afternoon trying to figure out how to use it effectively & it is not a subtle tool, requiring quite a bit of room to use & a fair bit of strength. More of this at a later date when I have some time with it.
The other woodworking project is also progressing:
These are the two longbows mentioned a few weeks back, there is still a way to go with these. It's not a job you can rush, if you remove too much material or remove material in the wrong place the job is buggered so theres a lot of weighing up work going on. Its unusual to find yew of the right quality for bows these days, If I cut 25 pieces in a year only one or two will actually be any good. The best stuff comes from the centre of overgrown yew hedges where the trunks have been forced to grow straight up to the light with very little side growth. Apparently Pacific Yew from Oregon is very good, but this is hard to get hold of in Shropshire so for the time being I will continue to use my closely guarded sources closer to home.Handgrenadealienhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16616013296799287812noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5626442190754966313.post-47311637695792149852016-02-14T05:57:00.001-08:002016-02-14T05:57:09.822-08:00More Gran Colombians from Orinoco Miniatures.Painting has been slow again this week, mainly due to long hours at work, but also my lack of a project that I am particularly enthused by. When funds allow I will purchase a lot more of Orinocos figures, they really are very nicely realised, they are on the smaller side of 28mm figures which makes the painting a bit harder work, but the payoff is worth the effort. The range is quite limited at the moment, though there are more on the way apparently.Handgrenadealienhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16616013296799287812noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5626442190754966313.post-77228116112888915082016-02-07T05:09:00.000-08:002016-02-07T05:09:23.295-08:00A Mixed Bag.After last weeks trip to the capital its back to painting miniatures again this weekend.
I've got eighteen of these, but will mix in some of the Victrix figures to make this up to a round two dozen. Despite the Victrix figures being taller their overall proportions are fairly similar so they shouldn't stand out too much.
Covered a fair bit of ground in three days, visiting The Natural History Museum ( full of people rushing round without actually stopping to look at anything properly), The British Museum ( full of Chinese people looking a bit overwhelmed) & The Tower of London ( full of Americans complaining about the weather). The highlight for me was HMS Belfast ( full of me plus other half & about half a dozen others):
Its taken a long time to actually make this visit, my first trip to London was with my Father when I was eight years old & the plan was to visit HMS Belfast & The Imperial War Museum. Unfortunately only the latter was open on the day we had available, which was fair compensation as I recall it being very good. The other thing that sticks in my mind was having very sore feet; my Father having somewhat idiosyncratic views on public transport insisted that we walked everywhere which was a bit hard on my young legs.
Glad I finally got to take a look at the old beauty though. It seemed very roomy on the day, but I suspect things were a bit more uncomfortable with 850 men on board & as for running through 40' seas round The North Cape, that simply beggars belief.
Or rambling.Which given the foul cold I am currently enduring may be more likely. I apologize if some of this is all greek to you, but my powers of explanation have also deserted me.
Normally one would picture a thorakites as a slightly better armoured thureophoros with a light mail shirt in addition to his thureos shield; but I got to thinking earlier, would the cuirass worn necessarily be of mail? Would it not be equally likely that this was of the more traditional linothorax type & if so what would this combination look like:
Actually not bad, almost like a latter day hypaspist ( depending on your point of view) & quite suitable for standing in line of battle as flank protection for the phalanx as well as providing a solid anchor for the thureophoroi while operating in rough country.Handgrenadealienhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16616013296799287812noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5626442190754966313.post-33489634005578048442016-01-24T03:44:00.004-08:002016-01-24T03:44:54.284-08:00Infantry Regiment No.2 Erzherzog. This week has been spent tidying up a few loose ends painting wise. Latest recipients of this benefice are the Crusader Miniatures Hungarian Fusiliers who have been languishing in a box since 2013:
They should have sabretaches, but I couldn't bring myself to undertake such a fiddly task, lets assume they were left in the depot.
I intend to push on with the Seven Years War project throughout 2016, nearly there with the Austrian Army just need a few more dragoons & a battery of artillery; my Prussian force is a little less complete requiring infantry, cavalry & artillery. I have plenty of Freikorps ( having become a bit obsessed with 'Green' Kleist) but the prussian regulars are a bit thin on the ground as yet.
Other than that I don't have too much planned for 2016. I'd like to complete my Lion Rampant Isleman force which will probably happen in March after our annual visit to Alumwell Wargames Show where hopefully Claymore Castings will be present with their Medieval range. There is still some way to go with my Republican Roman army, but I have lost enthusiasm for that for the time being. I think the chief reason for that is choosing to go down the plastics route for this project; they are very time consuming, not only is there the clean up & assembly time but the sheer amount of fine detail that has to be painted, strange to say but they are almost too detailed for wargaming figures.
On a somewhat larger scale I've started work on another couple of longbows having been fortunate enough to source some nice straight grained yew. The bow I completed last year continues to function nicely, so hopefully applying the same manufacturing techniques should be equally successful. I'm going for a slightly heavier draw weight this time ( approx 60-70lbs) so this may expose flaws in my bowyering skills. More on this as it happens.Handgrenadealienhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16616013296799287812noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5626442190754966313.post-36064776420204749172015-12-29T11:22:00.001-08:002015-12-29T11:22:40.371-08:00Warhammer Ancient Battles. Paul ( Lysimachus) won the initiative & elected for a general advance on his left & in the centre whilst refusing his right flank, I ( Seleucus) elected to advance everywhere resulting in combats on both wings. The fight between the two units of Companions & the Thracians on my right wing ended with the Thracians routing & being destroyed in the subsequent pursuit whilst on the other wing my Tarentines & Paul's Getae fought to a stalemate.
The impasse between the Tarentines & Getae continues for a while on the left, but the balance swings in my favour when the two ridden Elephants hit the flank of the Getae, who are destroyed in the pursuit, another melee develops alongside between Paul's peltasts & my levy infantry. The phalanxes in the centre finally get their fingers out & pile into combat, unfortunately for me so does Paul's solitary elephant: result, two of my phalanxes break & my one spare unit of companions also fails a terror test & flees, along with Seleucus. Game over.
Thats it really, a terrible result for me but good fun. For once the elephants on both sides proved decisive, not a solitary stampede despite some missile hits damage early in the game. Both our heavy cavalry units were signally useless, fighting out a stalemated combat for much of the game. Star units were Paul's elephant, his archers & my Tarentine cavalry. Abject failures were three of my phalanxes, but this is not un-expected, I rarely have much luck with them for some reason.Handgrenadealienhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16616013296799287812noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5626442190754966313.post-7255334849665805352015-12-28T09:12:00.001-08:002015-12-28T09:12:33.524-08:00The Annual Wargame for 2015. Korupedion.Even by my low standards its been a fairly poor year on the gaming front, in fact it's over 18 months since lead hit the table in the HGA household. Barring last minute mishaps this will be remedied tomorrow when Mr. Ireland & I convene to re-fight the Battle of Korupedion 281BC.
One of the lesser known battles between the Diadochi, this particular action was fought between the by now octogenarian Seleucus & the septuagenarian Lysimachos. Other than that the definite facts about the battle are that it was fought near Korupedion in Lydia & that subsequently after crossing from Asia Minor to Greece Seleucus was assassinated, possibly by Ptolemy Keraunos.
Obviously this allows for a fair degree of latitude in planning a war-game but I have tried to stay within the bounds of reason when writing the OOB's. They are as follows:

Lysimachos. Seleucus.

Cavalry.
1x10 Companions 2x10 Companions
1x9 Getic Nobles 1x12 Tarentines
1x9 Getic Horse Archers

Phalanx
3x28 Phalangites 3x28 Phalangites
2x30 Levy Hoplites 2x24 Phalangites

Light Infantry
1x Thracian Warband 1x Maiotian Warband
2x16 Peltasts 2x8 Persian Archers
1x8 Cretan Archers 1x8 Persian Hillmen

Special

1x Towered Elephant 1x Towered Elephant
2x Ridden Elephants
1x Scythed Chariot

The units were chosen to try & reflect the recruiting grounds available to the two monarchs. Lysimachos held territory in Thrace, hence the Thracians & Getae ( a more equestrian orientated tribe of Thracians), hoplites could be recruited from the cities of Greece & also along the Aegean littoral of Thrace though apparently they were not enthusiastic allies. The Elephant would be an older beast acquired when Lysimachos took over Kassander's army, whether it should be towered or not is a matter of conjecture.
Seleucus had most of Asia Minor & a large proportion of Asia to recruit from hence the presence of generic 'Persian' archers & javelineers. The Maiotian tribesmen were originally from the Black Sea region but are standing in here for an exotic blend of conscripted infantry. The second unit of Companions are most likely Iranians rather than Macedonians. The ridden elephants represent those available from the 500 acquired by Seleucus prior to 301BC whilst their towered brother is again based on conjecture.
The set-up is shown below:
A quick Re-cap.This project has been a real slow burner for me. I started around 1995 with 1/72nd Revell plastics & then upgraded to 28mm when Crusader Miniatures started producing Austrian figures for this era, can't remember when this event occurred but it was quite some time ago, but regardless it has taken me quite some time to get the collection to the stage illustrated below.
Still a long way to go with this endeavour. Going to need at least 3 more Prussian infantry units, a couple of cavalry units to back up 'Green' Kleist's horsemen & not forgetting an artillery battery. The Austrians will also require artillery & a couple more cavalry units plus a few more infantry to finish off No.2 Erherzog ( which I have undercoated ready to go). Should only take me another 20 years to get them to the war-games table I reckon.Handgrenadealienhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16616013296799287812noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5626442190754966313.post-81628984429231381222015-12-20T03:39:00.002-08:002015-12-20T03:39:41.318-08:00Freikorps Le Noble. The theme for December seems to be clearing up the lead mountain so continuing in this vein I have begun finishing off the small number Seven Years War figures that have lain neglected since 2013.
Amongst these were a few Foundry miniatures Freikorps Le Noble with their unusual casquet headgear:

Not the most animated figures certainly, but nice crisp detail & easy to paint. Mainly shaded with washes which I find work well on greens with a couple of highlight shades on the straps & helmet ciphers.Handgrenadealienhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16616013296799287812noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5626442190754966313.post-49963919006203970752015-12-06T04:00:00.000-08:002015-12-06T04:00:52.858-08:00Sons of Somerled.Re-visiting another older project this week, finally decided on the heraldry for my Lion Rampant Isleman army:
Of the miniatures painted this year these were the ones I enjoyed most so I'm going to bite the bullet and order a few more packs form Claymore Castings, not too many shields though, painting heraldry makes my eyes hurt.
These represent the regiments of Sir Wm. Vaughan & Col. John Marrow/ Col. Robert Werden, two of the royalist horse regiments active in Cheshire & the Welsh Marches from 1643 to 1646.
Although attached to Royalist field armies for the larger campaigns a lot of their time was spend garrisoning local strongpoints, beating up enemy quarters & general skirmishing. One would suspect that they were also a plague on the local population as they were expected to live off the land, indeed there are a couple of extant reports of Vaughan's men making off with bed linen & other goods without regard for the householder's Royalist sympathies.
